What it is

Fifty-two readings, one a week for a year. Each takes about a minute to read aloud. Plain enough for a child, deep enough for the adult in the room.
From the four Gospels. Every reading grows from a verse or a story in Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, named at the top of the page.
Three discussion questions under each reading. They help a young reader understand the reading, and understand themselves. There are no right answers. Some have an easy answer and a harder one underneath.

The leader’s guide

Every reading has a session in the leader’s guide. Each session is a set of pieces: a 45-minute core (Gather, Read, Talk, Do, Send) and blocks that stretch it to an hour, ninety minutes, or two hours, with a game, something to make, music, a way to serve, and a snack-and-talk. Two tracks run through it, ages 9 to 12 and 13 to 18, so one leader can run a mixed room. Under every question is a note on where it tends to go.

There is a light in you.

It was there when you were born. It was there before you learned your name. It has been there every day since, whether you felt it or not.

When you were happy, the light was there. When you were sad, the light was there. When you forgot about it for years, the light was there.

The darkness has never put it out. Not the hardest thing that happened to you. Not the worst thing you did. Not the long season when you could not feel anything at all.

The light is still there. It is in you right now.

It does not need you to believe in it. It is simply there. Like your heartbeat. Doing its quiet work whether you are paying attention or not.

Talk about it

The light in you cannot be put out, no matter what happens. What is one other thing about you that no one can take away?
The light stays even when you forget about it for years. Think of a time you forgot it was there. What was going on? Was it still there?
The light is there whether you believe in it or not. Does that help, or does it bother you?
